Make good word choices. When were not sure which word is the right one for a sentence, look it up in a dictionary. Many of us choose words in a hurry and dont take the time to decide if theyre proper. 2 .

Check facts. If we want people to believe what we write, we must make sure our facts are true. We should use dependable facts.

Rewrite. A common problem is that we dont like to rewrite. In fact, rewriting is the best way to find out and correct some mistakes, like grammar and spelling mistakes. 3 , though it takes more time and more work.

Read aloud. Sometimes its easier to find problem with spelling, word usage, and grammar when we read aloud. Reading aloud helps us not only find out our problems but also develop our writing.

4 . Preparing a list is necessary for writing a good article. Such a list includes: Is there a proper title? Have we explained every point? Are all the parts of the article included? This can help us to make sure that we have covered everything.

Have you seen the cartoons of two penguins (企鵝) on the Internet? They sit on either side of a small boat. They are friends, but each does something selfish (自私的) which causes their friend “ship” to sink (沉沒).

1 It shows how much people value friendship and sometimes worry they may lose their friends. 2 A friend is someone to talk to about your deepest feelings. And with a good friend you will never be alone.

3 The key to protecting your friend “ship” from sinking comes down to three simple things: sharing, caring and communicating. Good friends like to share everything with each other. They share their snacks, they share their knowledge about schoolwork, and sometimes they even share their clothes! 4 They do whatever they can to make their friends happy. But the most important part of friendship is communicating.

5 It also means that you keep in touch with your friends even though they may be in different schools or live far away. Without communication it is sure to send your friend “ship” to sink into the sea.

Humans Greatest Achievements

The Earth is 4.5 billion years old, but the human race has lived on it for just 200,000 years. In that short time, we have achieved some amazing things.

1 The list is almost endless. The invention of the airplane has changed our lives. The discovery of antibiotics (抗生素) has saved the lives of millions of people. Can you imagine living without electricity? What about the printing press (印刷術)? Without the printing press, you wouldnt be reading this. In the last 50 years, there have been great achievements in communication, such as radio, TV, computers, the Internet, and smartphones (智能手機). 2

What about the arts? The arts have brought pleasure to many people, but are the Beatles and Bach more important than antibiotics? 3

Finally, we must not forget humans early achievements. 4 We cant imagine modern life without cooked food and cars.

What are humans greatest achievements? To answer the question, we need to decide what we mean by “great”. 5 Or is it just something that makes us say “Wow,” like the Great Wall? What do you think?

閱讀下面短文,根據所讀內容在文后表格中的空格里填上適當的單詞或短語。

Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian artist and scholar (學者) who had many talents in addition to his painting. He was and also still is the greatest genius to ever live. Why? There are numerous (大量的) reasons! But here are just a few to begin with.

1. Productive Works

Most geniuses, such as William Shakespeare and Albert Einstein, were masters in just a single field. This simply isnt the case with Leonardo. For him, art and science cannot be separated. He was so talented that he explored and mastered subjects as diverse as cartography (制圖學), archaeology (考古學) and engineering. Actually, he painted only to pay for his living costs and created many masterpieces like the Last Supper.

2. Early History

Leonardo was mostly a self-taught genius. His formal education had been very basic and completed at a very young age. His great success came not from a natural talent but from a desire to learn new things.

3. Invention and Creativity

The reason why Leonardo stands out from other great geniuses is that he pursued creativity. He also thought that everything was possible. He made full use of the knowledge that he had learned from real experience and scientific experiments. He designed many inventions, such as the flying machine, the military tank and the first scuba diving equipment, all of which were only reinvented (以新形式出現) around 400 years after his death in 1519.

The Futurist magazine has published a report examining key trends in technology, values, lifestyles and other important areas, called Trends Shaping Tomorrows World. The following are among the trends:

In the United States, one-third of people born after the baby boom have returned home and live with their parents for various reasons.

By 2040, at least 3.5 billion people will run short of water, almost 10 times as many as that in 1995. By 2050, about two-thirds of the worlds population will be living in regions with widespread shortage of water.

Worldwide, the elderly (age 65 and older) numbered 440 million and represented 6% of the global population in 2002. The number will nearly double by 2030.

There were nearly 10.4 million women-owned U.S. businesses in 2015, up 42% from 2000. Women-owned firms currently employ 13 million people and produce $1.9 trillion in sales. In Britains top 20 firms, 90% will have at least one female director on their boards in the near future.

In Britain, about 4.2 million surveillance cameras (監視攝像機) watch over streets, office buildings, schools and shopping centers. On average, the British are caught on camera about 300 times per day. In large and medium-sized cities around the world, the space that remains unwatched by surveillance cameras will continue to get smaller.

Once thought to be a purely American problem, time pressure will also become a fact of life across the developing world. In the next three years, more people will feel short of time.

When we say someone is in a blue mood, it means he or she is unhappy or sad. Are you feeling a little blue? Here are some fast and easy ways to cheer you up.

Exercise

When you exercise, your brain gives out a chemical called Endorphin (內啡肽). This chemical makes you feel happy. That is why exercise is good for you.

Have a talk

If something or somebody is troubling you, dont quarrel with other people to relax yourself. It is a good idea to have a heart-to-heart talk with a friend or a family member. Tell them your feelings. A chat is a useful way to make you feel better.

Have some hobbies

For example, playing pop music, drawing something or listening to your favorite music will make you smile. Act like an artist. Draw, paint or make something. Being active and creative makes you feel more satisfied and less nervous.

(2016年鎮江卷)Everyone wants to find happiness. But sometimes looking for happiness can be as hard as looking for lost treasure. Just when you think you nearly reach it, something unexpected happens. This may puzzle (使困惑) you a lot. Here are some tips for helping you find happiness.

Dont put all your eggs in one basket. If you depend on one thing or one person to make you happy, it may be impossible. You need to enlarge your circle of friends and activities.

Follow your heart. When we go against our own thoughts, we usually feel sad. Follow your strong feeling and let it guide you toward people and things that will improve your life. Day by day, you will be happier than before.

Organize your ideas. Many people push away happiness when they think too much. Dont keep everything in head. Try making a list of the things that seem too big to manage on your own. You may find the list isnt as long as you thought. You can do most of the things by yourself.

Look at your life as a whole. Most of the things that prevent us from feeling happy are just some little things. Remember life is always going on, and whatever the little thing is, it will end.

Remember your values (價值觀). We all have a value system, a way we have decided to go through life, which makes us feel like a good person. The important thing is to remember your values when life becomes hard. Keeping your values strong will help create happiness.

Happiness can be hard to feel at times, so dont think there is something wrong with you if you dont feel it. The ways above will help you to feel more of it.

Summer schools

Summer vacation means long days, sleeping in or enjoying the summer sun. It is quite true for students to enjoy a rest after a long and difficult year. But more and more parents fear their kids forgetting a lot of knowledge, so they send their children to summer schools. Because summer schools can help children go over the knowledge that they have learnt during the school year.

In summer schools, students probably study in a more relaxing situation and can come up with interesting topics for discussion with their teachers. Usually, the number of students attending summer schools is smaller, so this gives them a good chance to connect with other students and teachers better. If a student has failed a course, summer schools may help him or her. Moreover, they are building their creativity (創造力) and imagination (想象力) as well as learning social skills.

On the other hand, summer schools bring children problems at the same time. It takes children the whole summer vacation to learn without playing. That is too long, as a result, it may make them less interested in school during the coming year.

For many students, taking summer classes can be a tiring experience. Teachers teach the subject too quickly, which only harms the whole education of students. Summer schools are usually expensive. They usually offer only a few subjects. So many students have to take classes that they dont like.

A summer school can be a good chance for students who need it, but it can be difficult for students who need a rest. So you can decide whether a summer school is suitable for your children.

College dormitories consume (消費) plenty of water, electricity and other natural resources every day. However, there are ways for college students to live a green life.

Watch Water Usage

It is possible to save water and still lead a clean life. Taking shorter showers, turning off the water while brushing your teeth, and using less water when washing dishes are a few ways that college students can save water. If shorter showers are out of the question, try to reduce the number of showers; on average, one ten-minute shower can use four to five gallons (加侖) of water at a time.

Using Less Electricity

There are simple ways to reduce the amount of electricity a student consumes. Turning off the lights before leaving for meals or classes, unplugging (拔去……的電源插頭) unused electronics, and turning down the heat before going home for the weekend are good ways to reduce electricity without greatly changing ones lifestyle.

Reusing and Recycling

Many colleges and universities are installing (安裝) recycling bins. If these are available, students should follow school recycling procedures and encourage fellow residents to do the same.

Students can reuse things they would normally throw away. Refilling water bottles or using them to hold pens and pencils keeps them out of landfills (廢物填埋池). To save paper, students can print assignments on both sides of a piece of paper, or reuse old paper as scrappaper (便條紙) to take quick notes. Make lists on old pieces of paper instead of getting a new piece.

Getting Others Involved

Students who want to get others involved should talk to their dorms staff about establishing green programs throughout the building.

Title: Inner voice helps a lot throughout our lives

When you couldnt open your mouth till the first two years on the earth, inner voice helps you understand things. Inner voice always shows thoughts and ideas in the body.

It justifies (判斷) what is right and what is wrong. When we go against inner voice, we usually feel uncomfortable throughout our lives.

Sometimes when we are feeling sad, we seem to need some kind of support in spirit. We usually speak to our closest friend or our dearest family member during times of unhappiness to feel better. After talking to them, we suddenly feel active again, because our inner voice reminds us to get on with things and leave the things of the past in the memory.

Inner voice is always right most of the time, because it knows us better than others and even ourselves. Its good to go by inner voice most of the time. Whenever you are trying to smoke, or whenever you are asked to choose one side in an argument, you are always worried about the result. During these times, your inner voice tells you what to do. If you dont follow your inner voice, you might be unhappy in the future. Its our own choice to either pay no attention to our inner voice or follow it and search for real happiness.

Many people run for exercise. But what will you do if you are not a “born” runner or jogger (慢跑者)? You may still want a kind of exercise thats inexpensive and easy to do. Why not try walking?

Walking requires no special equipment (裝備). It is a kind of exercise that almost any normal, healthy person can do. Walking is good for your health like jogging or running; it will just take longer. Jogging and running make your heart work harder than walking. They also put more stress on your legs and feet than walking does.

The problem with walking is that most people dont take it seriously. But theres a big difference between serious walking and the walking that most of us do. Walking, like jogging, should have a steady and continuous motion (穩健而持續的動作).

If you want to get your exercise by walking, you need to have your own walking plan. After all, runners and joggers set goals for themselves. Walkers need goals, too. You also need to set a course to walk. Start by walking about 15~30 minutes a day. Increase your time and distance (距離) slowly. And try increasing your walking speed little by little.

If you prefer to jog or run, follow the same advice. Start off slowly. Spend most of the first few days just walking. Then, start walking and running on the same day. Run or jog a short distance, then walk for a while, then, run, then walk. Follow that pattern for 15~30 minutes a day. Slowly make each run longer and each walk shorter. Later on, you can increase your distance, speed and exercise time.

(2016年咸寧卷)Too many people want others to be their friends, but they dont give friendship back. That is why some friendships dont last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest, be generous (慷慨的), be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to be honest to one another.

①如果你不說實話,人們通常都會識破。If a friend finds out that you havent been honest, you may lose your friend.

They tell your friend what is important to you. ③____.

Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand. Moving from work to family isnt always an easy thing. And if you dont s 4 your kids that youre thinking about them, they may think that you dont care.

As I started down the road, I suddenly stopped to t 5 back to my house and wrote a short message on a c 6 of cards to each of my children. I put each in a “secret” place where I knew they would find it. When I called the next night, they both said e 7 , “Daddy, I got your card. When did you do that?”

I was moved when I heard these words. What I had never thought was that a small thing had a big influence on my kids. It proved (證明) that they were in my heart. And distance (距離) couldnt s 8 them from their father. To my satisfaction, they feel “love” of their father. This v 9 experience encouraged me to continue to do the small things to be a responsible father.

As fathers get much busier and have to work longer hours, they usually pay l 10 attention to the small things. Dont miss the good chances to let your kids see how important they are.

Take a moment to do a small thing for your kids. It wont seem small to them.
