Task 1

Over the last three decades, meaning in life has emerged as an important question in medical research. A recent study by researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that the presence of and search for meaning in life are important for health and well-being,though the relationships differ in adults younger and older than age 60.

The three-year study examined data from 1,042 adults, ages 21 to 100-plus. The presence of and search for meaning in life were assessed with interviews, including a questionnaire about meaning in life where participants were asked to rate items, such as, “I am seeking a purpose or mission for my life” and “I have discovered a satisfying life purpose”.

The study, published online in the December 10, 2019 edition of The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, found the presence of meaning in life is associated with better physical and mental well-being,while the search for meaning in life may be associated with worse mental well-being and cognitive functioning. “When you find more meaning in life, you become more contented, whereas if you don't have purpose in life and are searching for it unsuccessfully, you will feel much more stressed out,”said senior author Jeste.

The results also showed that the presence of meaning in life exhibited an inverted (倒置的)U-shaped relationship, while the search for meaning in life showed a U-shaped relationship with age.The researchers found that age 60 is when the presence of meaning in life peaks and the search for meaning in life was at its lowest point.

“The medical field is beginning to recognize that meaning in life is a clinically relevant and potentially modifiable factor, which can be targeted to enhance the well-being and functioning of patients,” said Awais Aftab, MD, first author of the paper. “We hope that our findings will serve as building blocks for the development of new interventions (干預) for patients searching for purpose.”

Throughout the day, pull your flashcards out and ask yourself questions again. If your teacher is having an exam review today, pay close attention and write down anything you haven't learned yet.Ten-to-twenty minutes before your study partner (or mom) shows up to quiz you for the exam, review your flashcards. Task 5

閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。

I have been lucky to have had many wonderful teachers in my life. However, the one that really stands out is Karl Chip.

I first met Chip as a senior in high school when I was deciding where to go to college.Chip was the self-appointed athletic recruiter for Wellesley College.

Chip guided several types of us. There was the “academic star type”, who seemed to go all out, needing only a small word to guide them. The “international transplant type” seemed to come from across oceans and mountains to this New England world and needed a life guide.Another was the “geniuses of economics type”,for whom he held a special place in his heart and ensured internships(見習) and jobs held in the most famous places. And finally, the last type was the “scratch and dent kids”, who came to Wellesley with some baggage. They are full of potential, but have trouble with their decisionmaking. And if you were a “scratch and dent kid”, and also happened to be an athlete, you had no choice but to be pulled into Chip's orbit.

I was one of Chip's “kids”, a “scratch and dent kid”, but all his kids, regardless of “type”received the same wisdom, love, comfort and attention. My story is just one of hundreds of examples of Chip's influence on his children.

Twenty-seven years ago, when I entered Wellesley College, I was an immature athlete and lacked self-confidence. By the time I graduated, I was full of self-confidence—and as a result, probably a much nicer person. I owe much of my growth to Chip and his devotion to me and the other kids.

How did that happen? One part was athletic. The legend of Chip's basketball team of the 1990s is the story of a team that during the 1989-1990 season experienced two wins and twenty losses. Just two years later, thanks in large part to Chip's encouragement and faith in our ability, we won the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Championship, putting our record for the year at twenty-four wins and just two losses.

注意:續寫詞數應為150左右。

Paragraph 1:

The other part was academic.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:

Chip passed away after a long illness last year.
