閱讀理解

When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.

Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it. Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam (橫桿), I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting: “Safe! Safe! Safe!” And that’s what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.

When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I’d given it up.

When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I’ve traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear: tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters. Weaving (穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded (滑) up to the beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I caught a few of his glances. “I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head. “Safe, man. Safe.”

“Yeah,” I said. “Safe.”

Family isn’t always blood. They’re the people in your life who appreciate having you—the ones who encourage you to make progress in healthy ways.

· Free yourself from negative people.

Relationships should help you, not hurt you. Choose friends who you are proud to know, who you admire, who love and respect you. When you free yourself from negative people, you free yourself to be YOU—and being YOU is the only way to truly live.

· Give people you don’t know a chance.

If you give them a chance, everyone has something amazing to offer. So appreciate the possibility of making new relationships. Trust your judgment. Be ready to learn, be ready for a challenge, and be ready to meet someone that might just change your life forever.

·

Treat everyone with kindness and respect. Any good relationship is based on sincerity and respect. Treat everyone with the same level of respect you would give to your grandfather and the same level of patience you would have with your baby brother. People will notice your kindness.

· Forgive people and move forward.

Don’t live your life with hate in your heart. You will end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate. It means you’re letting go of the pain, and instead choosing to learn from the incident and move on with your life. Remember, the less time you spend hating the people who hurt you, the more time you’ll have to love the people who love you.

A

I sat here at that same desk and stared at the computer. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, thinking about exam questions for a school test I would give to my English students tomorrow. My wife was off to a party somewhere, but I wasn’t alone. Our two children kept me company. Ten-month-old Edward spent most of his day looking at some cards and other different pieces of paper. But Meghan was different from her younger brother.

She followed a daily routine (常規) that needed much time and was difficult. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping her room, sitting for a few minutes on the bottom shelf of the bookcase to determine whether she still fitted there, checking regularly on Edward or jumping on the sofa.

I could do my own work fairly well during most of these chores. Unfortunately, I had not counted on the “Bib-bibs, bib-bibs”. “Bib-bibs, bib-bibs” shrieked (尖叫) Meghan, and her eyes were alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window. “No, Meghan,” I answered irritably. “Not now. Go away and leave me alone.”

She left without any attempt (嘗試) to annoy me. I could finish the test easily without interference. However, I saw her standing quietly with tears running down her cheeks. She had two fingers of her right hand in her mouth and watched me type. She caught sight of the birds from time to time.

At this moment, only for a moment, I saw a little girl crying because I didn’t have time for her, realizing somehow it was the sitting next to each other that meant everything. I put away the paper and stood up.

Jeffrey Hall, a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU), has used his research to define (明確) the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He’s also found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone’s acquaintance (泛泛之交) to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close friend or best friend.

But it isn’t spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship—hours spent working together, for example, don’t count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around, playing video games, and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone. “We have to put that time in,” Hall said. “You can’t make a friend without any effort.”

The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new homes. Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of four stages: acquaintance, casual friend, friend and close friend.

The main conclusion that Hall came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most important thing.

5. How long does it take to turn an acquaintance into a friend?

A. About 50 hours. B. About 90 hours. C. About 140 hours. D. About 200 hours.

6. The underlined words “that time” in Paragraph 2 refer to “time spent? ”.

A. working together B. finding new friends

C. helping a new friend D. doing fun things together

7. Which may help deepen a friendship according to the study?

A. Trying to understand your friend’s feelings. B. Enjoying quality time with your friend.

C. Treating a new friend like a close one. D. Being generous to your friend.

8. What is the main purpose of the text?

A. To solve a relationship problem. B. To introduce a teacher from KU.

C. To present the findings of a new study. D. To discuss the importance of friendship.

When someone is in a mess, we should try to help him. In return, he will help us when we are in trouble. Only we adopt such an attitude towards our friends can we benefit from our friendship.
