歐內斯特·米勒爾·海明威（Ernest Miller Hemingway，1899年7月21日－1961年7月2日）可以說是中國人最熟悉的美國作家之一。他曾分別在第一、第二次世界大戰期間奔赴歐洲進行戰地救護和當戰地記者，也正是因為這兩段經歷，他先后創作了《在我們的時代里》《第五縱隊》《喪鐘為誰而鳴》等反戰作品。

海明威在1952年發表的《老人與?！繁辉S多人視為其最優秀的作品?！独先伺c?！吩诎l表后的第二年獲美國的普利策獎，海明威在1954年榮獲諾貝爾文學獎時，評獎委員會明確指出這部作品正是他獲獎的原因之一?！独先伺c?！吠瑫r也是海明威自己最滿意的作品之一，是海明威個人世界觀和人生觀的結晶。

《老人與?！肥歉鶕嫒苏媸聦懗傻?。第一次世界大戰結束后，海明威移居古巴，認識了老漁民格雷戈里奧·富恩特斯。1936年，富恩特斯出海在離岸很遠處捕到了一條大魚，但由于這條魚太大，漁船在海上拖了很長時間，結果在歸程中大魚被鯊魚襲擊，回來時只剩下一副骨架。這件事當時就給了海明威很深的觸動，他覺察到此事是很好的小說素材。1950年圣誕節后不久，海明威開始動筆創作《老人與?！?。他在1951年2月23日完成了初稿，前后僅用了八周時間。同年4月，海明威把手稿給到古巴去探訪他的友人們傳閱，博得了一致好評。

小說的主人公是一位名叫圣地亞哥的老漁夫，配角是一個叫馬諾林的小孩。風燭殘年的老漁夫一連84天都沒有釣到一條魚，但他不僅不肯認輸，反而充滿著奮斗的精神，終于在第85天釣到一條巨大的馬林魚。大魚拖著船往海里走，老人獨自一人死拉著魚餌線不放。即使沒了水和食物，左手抽筋了，他依然不灰心。經過兩天兩夜之后，他終于殺死大魚，把它拴在船邊返航，但許多鯊魚前來搶奪他的戰利品。盡管他奮力殺死了眾多的鯊魚，但他捕獲的馬林魚仍難逃被吃光的命運，最終，筋疲力盡的老人拖著一副魚骨頭回家。

《老人與?！烦霭婧笤欢啻胃木幊呻娪昂碗娨晞?。1999年，俄羅斯動畫師亞歷山大·彼得羅夫（Alexander Petrov）別出心裁地把小說改編成一部長20分鐘的動畫片。該片采用的是玻璃動畫的形式——這是一門以慢干型油彩在玻璃片上制作動畫的技術。彼得羅夫在這門技術上造詣很高，曾憑借玻璃動畫多次獲獎?！独先伺c?！吠耆窃诓Ａ蟿撟?，是彼得羅夫將自己的指尖當作畫筆涂抹油彩，他也是世界上唯一使用自己的指尖來作畫的動畫師。他花了兩年時間，畫了近三萬張畫稿。他創作的每一個畫面都是一幅精致的油畫，在玻璃上滿溢流淌的色彩和線條非常生動地表現了人物的心理活動?！独先伺c?！穭赢嫺σ幻媸?，馬上好評連連，并在2000年獲奧斯卡最佳動畫短片獎。

Santiago: Good luck, Manolin.

Referee: Eleven hours and still counting. Santiago: They changed the referees every four hours so that the referees could sleep. Many of the13)bettors had asked for a14)draw because they had to go to work on the docks, loading sacks of sugar. Otherwise, everyone would have wanted it to go to a finish.

The match had started on a Sunday morning and ended on a Monday morning. For a long time after that everyone had called me “the champion.”

Man is not much beside the great birds and beasts. Though they’re not as intelligent as we who kill them, they are more15)noble and more able. I would rather be that beast down there, in the darkness of the sea.

The fish is my brother, but I must kill him. I am glad we do not have to kill the stars. Imagine if, each day, a man must try to kill the moon. The moon runs away. But imagine if a man, each day, should have to try to kill the sun. We are born lucky. It is enough to live on the sea and kill our true brothers. I have never seen or heard of such a fish, and now we are joined together.
