Rain or shine, Tsering Chopa treks (艱苦跋涉) for long hours to deliver mail. For 18years, the Xizangs mailman has been an important link between a remote, high?altitudesettlement and the rest of the world.

At 5,373 meters above sea level, Pumachangthang in the Xizang Autonomous Regionis China's highest township. The oxygen level is less than 40 percent and the annual aver?age temperature is -7℃. However, these weren't the biggest challenges for a postal service.The area of the township is about 1,500 square kilometers, but its population is less than 2,000. The distance from the county town is some 70 kilometers and a single trip to all the sixvillages can be as long as 160 kilometers.

The busiest time for Tsering Chopa is between July and August each year, when stu?dents are waiting for their admission letters from various universities. He recalls once hehad to deliver mail to one student whose family had already moved away. He had to askneighbors several times to find the new address. It was summer and the usual road to thevillage was blocked because of rain. He trekked for more than 20 kilometers and struggledwith shortness of breath all the way to finally deliver the letter.“ I don't mind the hardshipsbecause it is not easy for students from remote villages to get college admission. It was myduty to deliver the mail on time,” he says.

One night in February 2019, a local resident Nyima Tserings daughter had fainted(暈倒) and desperately needed help. Knowing that, the mailman arranged for a car rightaway and sent her to the county hospital. He also gave some cash to the family for the girl'streatment. Nyima Tserings daughter recovered soon, and Tsering Chopa became an idol inthe village.

In 2019, Tsering Chopa received the China Youth May Fourth Medal.“ It is an ac?knowledgment of what I do and I want to help more people living in remote areas. I want tobring the world closer to them and take them closer to the world.”

Life is like a roller coaster, and every point has ups and downs. People plan some?thing, but luck and misfortunes sometimes lead them toward a different destination. How?ever, passionate individuals are not scared of such uncertainties. They set goals, welcomechallenges, overcome obstacles, and eventually achieve what satisfies them.

Those who stay committed to their broad goals and find satisfaction even in unplannedcircumstances are truly victorious. One true example of such people comes from a womanpassionate about spreading happiness and helping others. Nicole Thornes is a mother, aformer police officer, and now serving society as a death doula (陪護師).

Nicole joined the police academy intending to be helpful to society. She believed thata police officer has the opportunity to eliminate crime, bring justice, and create a bettersociety for everyone. Although she became a mother during her studies and her responsibili?ties were increased due to children, she didn't give up on her passion. Nicole could havecalled off her studies, but her passion for serving society didn't let her step down. Withgreat efforts, she finally became a police officer and gave her contributions to law enforce?ment and the betterment of society. She was not only a police officer making full commit?ment to the society but also a mother who played her responsibilities in the best waypossible.

Everything went according to her plans, but uncertainty called off her journey as a po?lice officer. Nicole suffered from an injury in a mission that ended her career in the policeforce. But her dreams and passion did not let her stop. She became a death doula to con?tinue her dream. She chose this field after her grandfather's death, when she couldn't bearthe pain of losing him. Being a death doula, she is now providing comfort to the dying andtheir family during difficult times. She aims to spread prosperity in people's lives and helpthem overcome all the obstacles they faced throughout their life.

In the late 1990s, a family visited the public elementary school where I taught deafstudents. They said they would be moving to the district and planned to enroll (報名) theirdeaf daughter as a first grader. They were upset that their child's kindergarten teacher Janecautioned them not to have high hopes for her academically. Based upon assessmentresults, the teacher painted a discouraging picture for their little girl's future. Standingbehind them was Fiona, a beautiful five?year?old with long shiny brown hair and darkflashing eyes. The whole time her parents were there, she didn't make a sound or use signlanguage, even when her parents encouraged her.

After a few weeks with Fiona, I discovered I was dealing with a very bright, very strong?willed child. Although I was able to engage her in a variety of learning activities, writingwas a continual struggle. I tried all kinds of ways to interest her in writing. Every time thepencils came out, she would shut down and refuse to participate.

One day Fiona got off her bus and stood in front of the school, weeping. The staff mem?bers present did not know enough sign language to ask her why she was crying. Finally they?took her into the office where they handed her a pen and a notepad. Fiona wrote:“PACBAK”. Immediately the office staff realized she left her backpack on the bus. Theyasked the bus to come back to school and soon Fiona was reunited with her backpack.

That day, Fiona discovered the power of the pen. From then on, she had a new appre?ciation for writing. She is a young woman now and has become an excellent writer, publicspeaker and student leader. During her senior year in high school, Fiona became the Doug?las County Rodeo Queen and the following year she enrolled at the University of NorthernColorado, determined to become a teacher. In the summer of 2008, I traveled to theNational Association of the Deaf Conference in New Orleans and watched her perform com?petitively as Miss Deaf Colorado. Fiona keeps in touch with me and I especially treasureher e?mail with term papers attached. This young lady has a very powerful pen!
